Choosing Bike Helmets

Bike helmets are required while you pedal the vehicle because it is a protective gear that will help cover our head when hitting the road or track. There is no guarantee that we won’t fall of the bike or get into accident which is why it is necessary to always wearing the helmet when you need to go out there, including for road cycling and mountain biking. However, not all of us will want to have the same helmet since they are also tailored to the discipline and even styling if you have specific taste.

In general there are road cycling helmet and mountain biking helmet or MTB in which you can set apart very easily on the basic. Road cycling is the majority of bicycle helmets are made for because it is the easiest to access for most of us while the rest are for the more extreme riding application or on the more difficult terrain. But, regardless the type, it is always recommended to look for the one made for your head size since this is very subjective and the best helmet is they need to fit properly on our head.

Before shopping for a helmet, especially when you decide to buy it online, we have to measure the head circumference first. We can just use a measuring tape and work about an inch above the eyebrow where the helmet’s rim usually placed. The brands will have a sizing chart or guide to use with their product so we can select which sizing that will match our head size. Do note that some models may only available in one universal sizing too.

After you have the sizing, we can shop based on the riding discipline whether you only ride on the road or also on the difficult terrain. While we can wear MTB helmets on the road, it is wiser to only wear MTB helmets for the more extreme terrain because road helmets may not able to provide the proper coverage for the head or have the necessary features to protect it. For example road bike helmets are usually lighter and simpler without visor to limit the weight.

On the other hand, MTB helmets are usually heavier and at the simplest form they have a visor that often can be removed or adjusted. There are also more material on the back of the head and above the ears to provide more coverage when we slip and hit the ground. In some MTB helmets, there are less ventilations and in addition we have a chin protector as well especially for application such as downhill riding or racing to cover the face area.

About Giro Agilis and Foray

Now when you already decide which bike helmet to buy, it is time to see what the market has to offer because there are so many of them out there. Bike helmets may look cumbersome but is important for our own safety because we never know what will happened out there and at least the helmet will be able to minimize the level of injury to be less severe. If this is your first helmet, we can narrow down the option based on the budget or the price point.

Among so many brands offering good bike helmets in the market, we have Giro which is also one of the most favorite options you can buy from. This brand carry a wide range of helmets based on the riding discipline both on the road and for mountain biking. Price wise they are also pretty competitive with many others and some of the most affordable choices are also great for beginner or most road riders. The confusing part is that many of them can be pretty similar.

For those who are only riding the bike on the road, we have Giro Agilis and Foray which are ideal if you are aiming for the best comfort as well. The best part of these bike helmets is you can wear them easily because many people are reluctant to wear one when they are not used to the feeling or their helmet while pedaling. Sizing is also important to prevent the helmet loosely sit on the head as well as causing pressure points.

Another pros from Giro Agilis and Foray is the price point which usually means lower product quality but this is not the case here because the two are very comfortable as well as pretty light. As road helmets, the two are easy to wear, comes with the standard feature we often see on the more expensive helmets, as well as still look great on most people. Overall we do think you can’t go wrong with any of the two.

Giro Agilis and Foray Design

Starting form how they look, styling is something very subjective but the two are very good looking. The difference is styling is quite a lot because the ventilation shapes and arrangement are different. They look really attractive but side by side the gap between the outer lid to the ears seems to be closer on Foray. In a glance the vents look larger on Agilis while the Foray has slimmer vents but is evenly spreading across the surface of the helmet.

In terms of weight, none of them are the lightest in the market but, still manageable at 336 grams for the large size for Agilis and 312 grams for the Foray helmet at the same size. They also have plenty of shades to choose from based on which seems to fit in your personal taste the most but for the overall appearance, none of them looks funny or too tall on the head. Giro Agilis and Foray Build Quality

Now for the most important part, let’s start with the build quality of Giro Agilis and Foray. As a safety gear, we want the helmet to be as robust as possible and this is why sometimes being lighter in weight is not the best decision. Strangely, while Agilis is lighter than Foray, this helmet has the better built quality over the other helmet because when you flip the unit, we can see that the outer foam located on the lid are all protected or covered with the polycarbonate shell.

On the other hand Foray is falling behind here because while there is no issue about safety and durability on the testing, it has quite a bit of exposed foam on the liner and this makes the helmet prone to chip or dents, especially when you travel with it a lot or when it gets bumped with other items in your storage. In addition, these helmets are available with MIPS feature as well to provide additional protection against rotational impact.

Giro Agilis and Foray Fitting System

Next for the fitting system, both Giro Agilis and Foray are using similar but different. First the Agilis has the Roc Loc 5.5 and the latter has Roc Loc 5 and the different part is your Agilis will have the better fitting system with a full three-dimensional coverage around the entire head which means the adjustment is easier and more conforming to the head’s shape. Foray on the other hand do have similar fit but the headband is only goes part-way around the head.

Giro Agilis and Foray Comfort

Lastly on the comfort wise, these helmets are very comfortable, thanks to the proper adjustment, but in comparison the Agilis probably better here for a wider range of head sizes and shapes because the headband that goes fully around the head and somehow not always available for the more expensive models so we really appreciate this design. The Foray is still comfy but not to the same extent to Agilis. On the ventilation the two are also amazing with plenty of air getting inside the helmet to cool our heads.

Higher performing helmets from these two are usually more expensive as well but with the ideal combination of fitting and ventilation, they are easy to wear including during summer. But, for the amount of vents, Agilis have 32 of them while Foray has 21 vents.

Giro Agilis vs Foray

Both Giro Agilis and Foray are ideal for road cycling and our personal favorite from the two is their level of comfort because it is difficult to find a helmet that will feels as comfy on your head but is still very affordable as well. The prominent difference between the two is that Agilis have the better built quality, lighter, also have the better fitting system and more vents or sir channel which makes the helmet one of the most comfy to wear on the road at the price point.

- MARKET-LEADING PROTECTION: Engineered in Giro’s category-leading helmet test lab
- MIPS: Utilizes the Multi-Directional Impact Protection System to redirect energy in a crash
- COMFORT: Easily adjust vertical position and tension with the Roc Loc 5.5 fit system
- VENTILATION: 32 Wind Tunnel vents with internal channeling
- 21 vents
- In-mold polycarbonate shell with EPS liner
- Coolmax padding
- Streamlined design

It is best to shop based on your preference because not all of us will have the same taste but between the two we will recommend Agilis because it is overall the better helmet and is still affordable too compared to many other road bike helmets out there.
